The Castle
Starting class a little later, we had an opportunity to catch-up on some much needed rest.
However, the overachievers of our group ventured out into the pouring rain to take advantage of the glistening
cobblestones and umbrella covered natives making their way to work.
We had fallen into the habit of walking a few doors down to Food Lab for lunch and today was no exception. They make a cauliflower soup that is to die for with crisp little chickpeas on the bottom and small pieces of pickled cauliflower floating in a creamy broth. I think it was mandatory that everyone on the trip try it at least once.
This afternoon’s mission was hiking around the castle complex. Since we had already visited here on Saturday, we visited the cathedral which had been closed. It was really gorgeous with brightly colored stained glass windows soaring over the pews. It was much larger than I anticipated and I’m glad we had a chance to return.
We decided to bypass the rest and head straight into Lesser Town to find the Lennon (as in the Beatles) Wall. Attracting all sorts of tourists, but particularly the young, the wall encouraged self expression with a marker or spray paint. We were just bystanders not having the forethought to bring either. The vibrant colors constantly change with the next wave of spray paint artists. On our way out of Lesser Town we found a store selling well crafted and artistic marionettes of which one will make its way back to Oklahoma.
Our last mission in Prague required a little exertion on our part. I mentioned earlier that two towers sit at opposites ends of the Charles Bridge which afford views of the bridge and its surrounds. We waited until the lights illuminated the castle in the distance and the lamps on the bridge were aglow before tackling the 100+ stairs to the top. A very small outdoor viewing area awaited us filled with others with a similar idea. We watched as the light slowly dropped and the lamps provided the only illumination on the bridge. We were also treated to a rising full moon over Old Town.
Tomorrow: Off to Vienna
